From Training to Impact: Building the Next Generation of Laboratory Leaders in Asia-Pacific

Strengthening Leadership for the Future

As countries across the Asia-Pacific face increasingly complex health threats, the need for strong laboratory leadership has never been greater. Beyond technical expertise, laboratories require leaders who can guide systems, respond to crises, and strengthen preparedness at both national and regional levels. However, traditional long-term training programmes—such as the two-year Global Laboratory Leadership Program (GLLP)—may not always be feasible for professionals balancing demanding roles and limited time.

Connecting National Efforts to Regional Progress

In response, the RPHL Network plays a critical role in enabling more accessible and collaborative approaches to leadership development across the region. By connecting institutions, facilitating knowledge exchange, and aligning efforts across countries, the Network helps translate global frameworks into practical, context-appropriate solutions.

Building on this, and in collaboration with the GLLP Consortium, the RPHL Network has introduced an intensive one-week training model through Training of Trainers (ToT) and Training of Mentors (ToM) on GLLP modules. This approach allows laboratory professionals to gain practical leadership competencies in a condensed format, while continuing their professional responsibilities and applying these skills directly within their institutions.

From Training to a Sustainable Network of Experts

Importantly, the learning journey extends beyond the training itself. Participants from both the first and second cohorts are connected through the RPHL Network GLLP Community of Practice, where they engage in peer learning, exchange tacit knowledge, and collaborate across borders. Early outcomes indicate that participants are applying their learning within their institutions, contributing to national capacity-building efforts while remaining connected to a wider regional network.

By combining accessible training with sustained regional engagement, this approach is helping to build a growing and sustainable pool of laboratory leaders and subject matter experts across the Asia-Pacific.

A Model for Sustainable Impact

This experience demonstrates that flexible, practical training—when paired with ongoing collaboration—can accelerate leadership development while remaining feasible for working professionals. More importantly, it highlights the value of regional platforms like the RPHL Network, which act as both an enabler and a connector.

Through these connections, individual learning is translated into collective progress, enabling laboratories across the region to strengthen systems in ways that are locally driven, resilient, and sustainable. In doing so, the RPHL Network is supporting the development of a self-sustaining ecosystem of laboratory leaders—ready to respond to emerging public health challenges and strengthen health security across the Asia-Pacific.
